It was just in times of
Renaissance when the art of flag throwing was born and nourished in the
field of medieval guilds. A guild's banner was considered a symbol of
purity, and as such it was not allowed to touch the ground. The Italian
practice of 'flag flourishing' is a unique survival of what was, in
fact, general military practice throughout Western Europe until the
mid-late 17th Century. Flag-throwing have begun in Renaissance Italy as
a celebration - a victory, or the announcement of some other event and
that tradition seems to survive until today. There are great tournaments
and flag flourishing festivals held on the occasions of presentations of
Italian cities or/and their quarters and apart from audience
entertainment the aim of such performance is to show and compete with
flag bearers skills.

All the members of our
group practice historical fencing and are interested in history for more
than 15 years. We were addressed and taken with the art of flag throwing
insomuch that we found a new space for our skills to be developed. We
began to learn the art a few years ago, originally for our own pleasure.
Subsequently, we decided to show the gained experience to the audience.

As a first step forward to
this area we prepared a comprehensive flag flourishing show combining a
fighting character of so-called German banners with Italian jolly flags.
These days we are preparing another conception containing both fencing
exhibition, flag handling and combat choreography.
